Exploring the Evolution of Contemporary and Alternative Gospel Music
Dear awesome reader,
How has your week been? How do you intend to spend the weekend? I’ll be catching up on the latest releases from Christian artists. If you haven’t added our New Music Friday playlist yet, don’t miss out! Add it to your library here.
Last Friday, we hosted an insightful X (formerly Twitter) Space conversation with songwriters and artists in Contemporary, Soul, and Alternative Gospel Music — Tianney, Maio, Caleb Music, Hope Nwani, and music producer, Sabi Soundz.
The space began with the question, “Why choose a genre that’s seemingly different from the usual Church music?” Their unanimous response: “There was an innate desire to freely express their sounds creatively.”
However, this creative freedom comes with challenges, as many artists face difficulties navigating the industry and staying true to their artistic vision. Beyond the rhythms, studio sessions, beautiful melodies, and wonderful sounds, it is well-known that music requires significant investment, which can be costly and challenging.
From the discussions in our space, I discovered that aside from the cost of producing music, artists find collaborating with other artists a bit daunting — from deciding who to approach to determining the right time. Caleb Music, a multi-talented songwriter, artist, and producer, encouraged fellow artists to focus on self-improvement to showcase their craft in the best possible way. On a personal note, when an artist dedicates their time and effort to high-quality music production, it deepens my appreciation for the art form.
Have you heard the saying, “If you don’t have money, have supportive people” Maio backed this saying explaining that having people can often solve problems without money. This might be a sign to focus more on building and nurturing relationships with others. Listening to Maio’s words echoed my father’s belief that a supportive community is the greatest gift a person can have.
Tianney mentioned that having a supportive team that eases the workload is key. For Hope Nwani, it’s hearing from people who have been blessed by his songs and are enthusiastic about supporting his vision. Maio shared the testimonies his music has inspired; how they remind him of God’s presence and keep him driven.
Another important topic discussed was the Christian community’s acceptance of the “new sound”. In Sabi Soundz’s reassuring contribution, he said, “No matter what genre of music you create, you will find an audience, and over time, that audience will expand.”
I agree that Christian music shouldn’t be restricted or labelled strictly. Rather, it should be instructive and serve as a blessing to listeners. Every sound should carry a message. And we should embrace contemporary Gospel music with an open mind.
As we explore new sounds and melodies, let’s remain open to the messages embedded in every genre, embracing the creativity that flows from artists seeking to bless and inspire through their craft.
Writing about the space doesn’t do justice to its impact. So, I have attached a link to the recording for you! You should listen to it and share your thoughts with us. Listen here.
During the space, Tianney and Maio shared news about their upcoming projects. Maio’s “Heavenly Therapy” drops today (Friday, August 30th) and Tianney’s “YOURS” will be released on September 6th, 2024. You won’t want to miss these tracks! 🎶
Till I write to you again,
Koko.
